When Google Inc. was founded 20 years ago, in September 1998, not even the keenest optimists would have expected the company built by two Stanford students to be among the world’s most valuable companies in the world 20 years later. Even in August 2004, when Google went public at a valuation of more than $20 billion, it seemed unlikely that the company would be worth nearly 40 times that and approach a valuation of $1 trillion by 2018.
